Welcome to the PHIL GORTON STUDIO website showcasing the work of a specialised photographic artist using slow film capture and traditional darkroom techniques - SCROLL TO VIEW MORE OF HIS WORK...

Based in Roag, Northwest Skye, Phil Gorton uses prime German optics to produce his images, believing that slow negative film emulsions are the best capture method for his saturated colour images, displayed in the gallery area as micro-environmental prints.

The photographs emphasise an original viewpoint, and are genuine fine art images exploring western landscape. They seek to challenge traditional thinking, offering the viewer a different interpretation of the environment, rejecting pre-conceived notions of sea, sky and landscape pictures.

Phil Gorton uses both Hasselblad and Contax camera bodies, both manual with no electronics or battery power, coupled with Carl Zeiss prime lenses. Zooms are not used, as they alter the relationship between middle ground objects in the frame when the focal length is changed whilst employing the same viewpoint. It is safer to change film camera lenses, too, as there is no sensor to damage.

The main difference between film and digital capture is the lens, film cameras using quality optics, and reducing down to a real image, an actuality. Digital uses a sensor and optic corrective software to give a representation of actuality, a pixelated image. Film exposure is controlled by the photographer, and developed using chemical reaction. Digital relies on a pre-determined software program.

Phil Gorton uses Kodak and Ilford negative stock, processing and printing onto Fuji Crystal Archive gloss, via DeVere Dichromat enlargers. Print sizes are (in inches) 18 x 12, 15 x 10 and 10.5 x 7. Other sizes are at the customer's request.
